Vera J. Schalles, age 90, of Bloomsburg passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Emmanuel Center for Nursing, Danville.
Born in Hollenback Township on September 3, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Ray E. Moyer and Letha E. (Hess) Moyer. She was a graduate of Nescopeck High School, class of 1953. Vera was born and raised on a dairy farm and always considered the Hobbie area her home. She devoted her life to being a homemaker. She was dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, who always helped with the needs of her family when she could.
In her younger years she was a member of St. Peters UCC, most recently she attended Shiloh Bible Church, Bloomsburg. When her kids were younger, she was a Cub Scout Leader and a member of PINE. After her own children were grown and out of the house herself and her husband, Rodney spent several years hosting international exchange students from Sweden and Russia. She loved animals, gardening and flowers and was an avid reader. She enjoyed crafting and did ceramics in her earlier years.
She loved nothing more than spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom she adored. She will be greatly missed by her son, Eric Schalles and wife Angela, Ashland; daughters, Beth Ann Schalles and husband Joseph Castel, Duncansville; Tracey Gibson and husband Robert, Milton; grandchildren, Erica Schalles and Scott Schalles, Ashland; Emily Krider, Hollidaysburg; Lucas Readler, Altoona; Kiersten Hess, Millville; and Shane Eddinger, Benton; great-grandchildren, Noah and Henry Krider, Myles, Stella, and Wells Schalles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Rodney E. Schalles; grandson, Zachariah Readler and her brother, Derwood Moyer and wife Shirley.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at St Peter’s United Church of Christ, 613 W County Rd, Wapwallopen (Hobbie). Interment will follow in Silver Maple Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the time of service at the church.
