Sophie Zajac

Sophie Zajac, 97, of Hollenback Township passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at her home.

Born in Mocanaqua on May 4, 1919, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Wojcik) Vnencak. She was educated in a one-room school house in Hobbie. During WWII, she moved to New York and was employed at Western Electric in New Jersey. After the war ended she moved back to Pennsylvania, where she met, and then married, Joseph J. Zajac, in 1949. In 1950 they bought their farm, where she worked with her husband, and continued to farm even after his death, in 1995.

Sophie was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians, St. Mary’s Church, Dorrance. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed by her loving children: daughter, Barbara Kopetskie and husband Tom, York; sons, Joseph S. Zajac and wife Karen, Wapwallopen, David Zajac, Hollenback Twp; cherished grandchildren, Christine, Tommy, Mary and Audrey; and adored great grandchildren, Charlee, Jaxon, Brody, Cali, and Sophie. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Gabsewics, Berwick; Helen Nadratoski, Mountaintop; Martha Bursa, Bound Brook, NJ; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Mike, John and Steve.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at St. Mary’s Church, 3529 Saint Mary’s Road, Wapwallopen, with Reverend Jeffrey Tudgay officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 AM on Tuesday morning at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third Street, Nescopeck.
