John W. Yorks, age 99, of Berwick passed away on Monday, August 1, 2022, at Geisinger Medical Center Danville. Born in Summerhill on October 27, 1922, he was the son of the late Ray A. and Nellie (Schaefer) Yorks. He was a graduate of Berwick High School and went on to Franklin Marshall College where he studied Pre-Med. In 1942, he entered the US Coast Guard, and served honorably as a pharmacist’s mate until 1946. After finishing active duty, he moved back to the area to take over his father’s business, Ray Yorks & Son Inc., which he was the president of for 62 years. John was a member of Summerhill United Methodist Church, Berwick. He was a life member of the Ranger Fire Department and a longtime member of Knapp Lodge 462 F&AM, the Elks Lodge 1138, the American Legion, and Berwick Lions Club. John was a member of the Berwick Golf Club where he played in many in golf tournaments. He also enjoyed mowing grass and maintaining his land. He will be greatly missed by his daughter Bonnie Shaw, Florida; Son John “Chris” Yorks and Barbara, Berwick; grandchildren, Amanda Haney; Ashley Shaw; Jaycee Yorks and Jolee Yorks. He also leaves behind five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by wife, Shirley Yorks; son, Ray Yorks; sisters, Martha Clewell; Ann Dorazio; Mary Lenhart and Dorothy Shotwell. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on August 4, 2022, at Heller Funeral Home 633 East Third Street Nescopeck, with Pastor Debbie Copeland officiating. Family will receive friends from 9:30am until the time of the service. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery will be private.
