Mary Ellen Melfi, 88, of Salem Township passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital.
Born in Berwick on December 30, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Hildreth Mae (Gearhart) Michael and her husband S. Charles Michael. She graduated from Berwick High School in 1946. Mary Ellen was employed briefly at Fulton Lamp Factory, Berwick, and later as an aide at Berwick Hospital. Most recently, she worked as a home health aide in the Hazleton Area. Her most important job, to which she was truly dedicated, was being a wife and mother.
Mary Ellen’s greatest pleasures in life her children, grandchildren and cooking.
She will be greatly missed by her children: daughter, Debbie Kern Green, Mifflinville; son, Scott Kern and wife Molly, Berwick; son, Michael D. Melfi, Berwick; grandchildren: Melissa, Amy, Laura, Scott Jr, and Aaron; and great grandchildren, Zander and Callie. She also leaves behind a brother, Charles W. Michael, Davenport, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Michael A. Melfi in 2002; sister, Shirley Venditti; and brother, Neil Michael.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third Street, Nescopeck with Reverend Craig Gommer officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Berwick. Family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made in her memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
