Henry L. Schenck, 92, of Berwick passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital.
Born in Danville on November 24, 1924 he was a son of the late Henry W. and Helen (Raup) Schenck. Henry was a resident of Berwick for 85 years.
He served in the United States Army during WWII, from 1943 to 1946, in the 69th Infantry division, 272nd Reg., 1st Battalion, Company C/104th Ordinance, serving in the European Theatre, fighting through Ardennes Battle of the Bulge, Siegfried Line, Castle, Lipsic, Targow, and where the Americans met the Russians to the end the war. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal, as well as other service medals.
Henry was employed by Bowman Motors, and later Columbia Packaging, Berwick. He was also a self-employed carpenter.
Henry was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church. He also was an active member of the American Legion Post 273 Bloomsburg. He loved spending time in Ocala Florida during the winter months. He enjoyed woodworking, bird carving, building canoes and restoring old tractors.
He was preceded in death by his wife Louise (Trivelpiece) Schenck; sister, Dorothy Gillespie and her husband, Ed Gillespie.
He will be greatly missed by his companion and best friend of 16 years, Ethel Hack; her children: Gail Long and husband Leo; Terry Hack and wife Rose; Randy Hack and wife Denise; close friends: Paul Canouse and wife Sandy; Lee Martz and wife Karen; and several cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third Street, Nescopeck, with Pastor Stephen Portner officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Berwick.
