Florence Edith Houston, age 72, of Nescopeck Township passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, holding the hands of her loving family.
Born in Binghamton NY on December 1, 1951, she was a daughter of the late Edward J and Mae (Golden) Haley. She graduated from Chenango Valley Jr/Sr High School in New York and furthered her education at College Misericordia where she earned a Bachelor of Science in English. For many years, Florence worked as a social worker at Northeast Counseling in Hazleton.
Florence was a feminist and child of the ‘60s who was intelligent, articulate, deeply spiritual and loved poetry, literature, art, music and nature and spent much of her spare time digging in her garden or buried in a book. She often went out of her way to help others and was a wonderful listener and great dispenser of sage, soothing advice to friends and family in times when they needed it most. In her absence she would want them to keep on dancing and breathing deep and to remember the Haley family motto, “May we be cheerful when we are called.”
She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her husband of 49 years, Michael L. Houston; daughters, Mae Nash, Nescopeck Twp; Ann Holland and husband Joseph, Albrightsville; son, Lewis Houston, Austin, TX; grandchildren, Haley Love Owens; Conor Holland; Mason Nash; Olivia Holland; and Gabriel Nash. She also leaves behind sisters, Kathleen Talmadge, Baltimore, MD; Constance Cooney and husband Robert, Baltimore, MD; brother, John Haley and wife Judith, St Augustine, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Edward J Haley; and sister, Ellen Haley; brother-in-law, William Talmadge; and sister-in-law, Jan Haley.
Florence cared for and loved many pets throughout her life, especially black labs Molly and Seamus and most recently tabby cat Skips.
At Florence’s request, a celebration of her life will be held at the Houston residence on July 29th at 1pm.
