Michael L. Houston, age 82, of Nescopeck Township passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025, at the VA Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre holding the hands of his loving family.
Born in Elizabeth, NJ on October 30, 1943, he was the son of the late Lewis W. Houston and Catherine H. (Ryan) Hooper. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Kingston. In 1962, he entered the U.S. Army and served until 1965 with the Green Berets, including one year in Vietnam. He remained in the Army reserves until 1968 while residing in California delivering mail for the US Post Office in Haight-Ashbury, including, at times, sacks of fan mail to Jefferson Airplane. After an honorable discharge in 1968, Mike returned to Pennsylvania and became a journeyman electrician and member of Local 163 IBEW, until he retired. He was a proud Union member who never crossed a picket line.
Mike served as president of IBEW twice during his career. He was a member of the Sierra Club, the VFW Post 8161 in Conyngham and the Special Forces Association. He was highly intelligent, always quick with a joke and was a voracious reader and jack of all trades who spent his free time gardening, building tree houses for his grandchildren and maintaining his Christmas tree farm. Mike taught his children to never judge a person by their position in life and always gave money or assistance to those in need.
In 1975 he married Florence E. (Haley) Houston. During their 49 years of marriage, they cultivated a rich, varied life full of children, music, animals, nature and good times. He missed her greatly after her passing on July 20, 2024.
He was a loving and supportive father and will be greatly missed by his daughters, Mae Nash, Nescopeck Twp; Ann Holland and husband Joseph, Albrightsville; son, Lewis Houston, Austin, TX; cherished grandchildren, Haley Owens; Conor Holland; Mason Nash; Olivia Holland; and Gabriel Nash. He also leaves behind a sister, Susan Switlik, Trenton, NJ; brother, Richard Bogdan and wife Lyn, Millertown, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Bogdan.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at the Heller Funeral Home. LLC, 633 E Third St, Nescopeck on December 6th at 10am with military honors at 11am.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the McBride Memorial Library in Berwick.
