Marthan Elizabeth Shoemaker, 72, of Shickshinny, went home with the Lord on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, Wilkes Barre.
Born in Shickshinny on November 9, 1943 she was the daughter of the late Floyd Elsworth and Gertrude May (Rissmiller) Whitmire. She graduated from Northwest High School in 1961. As a young adult, she worked at Winterstein’s Restaurant, Shickshinny. Most recently, she was employed at Consolidated Cigar, Berwick and McAdoo for 34 years before retiring.
She was a member of the Shickshinny Bible Baptist Church, where she was active in the Sunday School program, Vacation Bible School, and was a member of the Women’s Group. She loved reading, crocheting, cooking, and baking. Marthan loved to catch up with the women from her work once a month.
She will be greatly missed by her loving husband, Harold A. Shoemaker, with whom she spent nearly 50 years; brothers, James Whitmire, VA, Joel Whitmire and wife Marilyn, Shickshinny, John Gregory, Shickshinny; sister, Helen Whitmire Alberto and husband Jose, Shickshinny; as well as close cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at Shickshinny Bible Baptist, 43 Furnace St., Shickshinny. Interment will follow in Sorber Cemetery, Shickshinny. Family will receive friends at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third Street, Nescopeck, on Saturday evening, January 16, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 PM, and at the Church on Sunday from 12:30 until the time of service.
