George Stalega

George Stalega, 86, formerly of Orangeville, passed away peacefully at Masonicare at Newtown, CT, on February 14, 2016. George had been a resident of Masonicare at Newtown for seven years.

George was born and raised in Berwick, PA on September 17, 1929. He was the son of the late George and Catherine (Gerrish) Stalega. He graduated from Berwick High School and during those years loved playing baseball, basketball and (despite his parents knowing…football).

George enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 at the age of 18. He became Staff Sergeant in 1949 and was promoted to Master Sergeant in 1952 and was discharged in March 1954. George joined the Air National Guard and was active for 24 years. His tour of duty took him to the Azores, France and Spain.

George worked as a junior Clerk and was promoted to Senior Clerk in the Stock Exchange in Connecticut. From 1965 to the early 1970’s George was the Chief Financial Officer for Fidelity Corporation. He became Senior Vice President in the New York Stock Exchange from 1975-1979. From 1979-1988, he became president of his own brokerage firm, Dent and Company in Hoboken, NJ. He retired in 1990. George was a very active man who loved to exercise and play racquetball.

George was the youngest of eleven children. He was preceded in death by his siblings Mary Stalega, Anastasia Vallino, Nick Stalega, Mike Stalega, Catherine Stalega, Estelle Sarabura, Anna Vezendy, Charles Stalega and John Stalega. George is survived by his sister Stephanie Stalega of Berwick, PA.

George is survived by his wife of twenty-five years Margo Stalega, his three children, John Stalega and his wife Yolanda, Michael Stalega, both of Hebron CT, Deborah D’Weirdt of Rocky Hill CT, stepdaughter Deborah Russo and her husband Sam of Ridgefield CT, grandchildren Melissa, Nicole, Olivia, Jacqueline, Sarah, Phillip & Miles, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A prayer service will be held at 9:30 AM on Friday, February 19, 2016 at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third Street, Nescopeck, followed by a Parastas Service at 10:00 AM at St. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, 706 North Warren St., Berwick. He will be laid to rest in St Cyril and Methodius Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
