James W. Culver

James W. Culver, 79 formerly of Mifflinville passed away Sunday morning, November 8, 2015 at Elmcroft Senior Living where he had been residing since 2010.

Born in New Columbus on October 23, 1936, he was the son of the late Frederick C. Culver and Eleanor B. Hess Culver-Fisher. He was a graduate of Shickshinny High School class of 1954. He served honorably in the US Army from 1954 to 1957, during which time he was assigned to Ft. Richie, MD as part of the security team for then president, Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1958, James entered the “Old” Pennsylvania State Police Academy in Hershey. After graduating he was assigned to troop “T”, PA Turnpike, Somerset Station, then with troop “M” Bethlehem, Trevose Barracks, where he served the Bucks County area until retiring in 1986, after 28 years. He received many honors from the state police for his service. After retirement, Jim was employed as the safety and security manager at Wise Food, Berwick from 1987 to 1992, and most recently at Tuzzi’s Bakery Berwick until 2006.

Jim was always active and volunteered for many causes. He was named Bucks County, Man of the Year, in 1967, by the Levittown Jaycee’s. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 0495, Shickshinny, retired State Police Association of PA, as well as a member of Sylvania Lodge 354 F & AM, Shickshinny, Valley of Bloomsburg Scottish Rite Association, and Nescopeck VFW Post 8227. He was also a member of the Bloomsburg Baptist Church.

He married Gertrude Mae (Lessman) Culver in May of 1966. Together they lived in Fairless Hills until the early 1990’s, when they moved to Mifflinville. After nearly 30 years of marriage, Gertrude lost her battle with cancer and passed away in 1996.

In addition to his wife and parents, James was preceded by his stepfather, Leo E. Fisher in 1982, and grandson, Matthew T. Culver in 1992.

Surviving are his son, Daniel M. Culver, Sr.; grandchildren, Kristina Culver Jenson, Daniel M. Culver Jr, Nathan M. Culver; great grandchildren, Wyatt Culver and Kahlan Jensen.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third Street, Nescopeck, with Reverend Craig D. Laidacker officiating. Entombment with honors will follow in Elan Memorial Park, Bloomsburg. Friends may call on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
