James A. Dunbar, Sr, 87, of Bloomsburg, passed away on Tuesday night, December 2, 2015 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was a patient for the last 2 weeks.
Born in Troy, PA on September 1, 1928, he was the son of the late George A. and Martha J. (Fuller) Dunbar. He was raised and educated in the Troy area, and worked on the family farm prior to entering the military. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, where he earned the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze stars. After being honorably discharged in 1953, he returned to Bradford County where he worked as a deputy sheriff. James moved to the Berwick area in the early 1970’s and was employed at the BIDA complex. After becoming certified in upholstering, he opened “Jim’s Upholstering”, where he was self-employed until retiring in 1991. He was a member of the American Legion, Towanda, where he was an officer for several years. He was a former member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Berwick. Jim was very talented in sewing, and building things. If possible, he would manufacture the items he needed instead of buying them. He spent many hours completing “find-a-word” puzzles. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family, especially his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by his loving daughter, Cindy Pursel, with whom he resided; son, James A Dunbar, Jr and wife Theresa, Berwick; grandchildren, John Karns II, Jordanna Karns Kreischer, Aaron Karns, Hayley Dunbar and Natalie Dunbar; great grandchildren, DeJanee Karns, Destin Karns, Draelyn Karns Kreischer, Tyleigh Karns, and John Karns III. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl, Earl and Harry Dunbar; and sisters, Rose VanBuren, and Flora Snook.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate his life at a later date.
