John J. McDonald, 81, of Salem Township, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, December 14, 2015, at his home with his wife by his side.
Born in Newport Township on March 21, 1934, he was the son of the late James and Lottie (Bunor) McDonald. He attended Newport Township High School and served in the US Navy from 1953 to 1956. He worked as a mechanic at Consolidated Cigar in Berwick until it closed, then at the McAdoo location, accumulating over 30 years until he retired.
John was a member of St. Mary’s, Immaculate Conception BVM, Berwick. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 350, Nanticoke and the former VFW, Mocanaqua. He liked tinkering on projects and doing lawn work around the house. He was a very social person who enjoyed engaging in conversations with everyone.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Patricia (Litchkofski) McDonald; son, Tracy McDonald, at home; daughter Lisa Hero and husband Greg, Nanticoke; and grandson, Matthew McDonald. He is also survived by a sister, Phyllis Collett, Greenville, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by a brother, Edward McDonald.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 18, 2015, at St. Mary’s Church, Berwick, with his pastor, Reverend Francis Tamburro officiating. Family will receive friends in the chapel from 9:00 AM till the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in John’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 57 North Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
