Clayton A. Harman

Clayton A. Harman, lifelong resident of Nescopeck Township passed away, just 17 days shy of his 90th birthday, on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Brookdale Assisted Living, Bloomsburg.

Born on May 27, 1926, he was the son of the late Claude C. and Lenna E. (Rough) Harman, and attended Nescopeck High School. Clayton owned and operated his own farm in Nescopeck Township, and simultaneously worked at several other local businesses, including Zieser Vault Company, where he was employed for 25 years.

He was an active member of Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, Nescopeck Twp., where he held various consistory positions, and was a Sunday School teacher. He was Judge of Elections for Nescopeck Twp. and secretary for Mt. Zion Cemetery for several years. Clayton liked woodworking, and fishing, especially when his children were younger. He loved gardening and tractors even after he could no longer operate his farm. He enjoyed taking walks daily and stopping to visit with his neighbors.

Clayton was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley May (Peters) Harman on July 4, 2011; sisters, Esther Naugle; Leitha Sitler; brothers, James Harman, Harold Harman; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, including Clayton “Red” Rinehimer, who was also his close friend.

He will be greatly missed by his loving children: daughters, Brenda Pecora and husband Pat, Sugarloaf Township; Ella Lute and husband Daniel, Harrisburg; Carolyn Gowin and husband John, Lehighton; sons, Charles Harman and wife Cynthia, Nescopeck Township; Gary Harman and wife Carla, Nescopeck Township; 20 cherished grandchildren; and 18 adored great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Lydon Peters and wife Carol, Hobbie; sister-in-law, Eleanor Rinehimer, Hobbie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 13, 2016 at Mt. Zion UCC, Church Road, Nescopeck Township with his pastor, Reverend Richard Dennison officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third Street, Nescopeck or at the Church on Friday from 10:00 AM till time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Mt. Zion UCC Memorial Fund, 832 Third Street, Nescopeck, PA 18635.

The family would like to thank Commonwealth Home Health and Hospice of Berwick, and the staff at Brookdale for the care Clayton received. They are also grateful to Reverend Richard Dennison for the spiritual guidance and friendship he extended over the years.
