Eugene A. “Tom” Messersmith

Eugene A. “Tom” Messersmith, 83, of Berwick passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born in Berwick, he was a son of the late Richard D. and Violet M. (Berlin) Messersmith. He was raised and educated in Nescopeck. Tom served in the Army National Guard, and was called to active duty during the Korean War. He worked for Champion Valley Farms, Del Monte Foods, and Berwick Offray. After retiring, he worked as a crossing guard for the Berwick School District.

Tom was a life member of Eagle Hose Co. and the Berwick Fire Police. He was an avid NASCAR fan and greatly enjoyed watching pro wrestling. He was a capable handyman who was always looking for things to tinker on around the house.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shelby Jean (Evans) Messersmith on December 13, 1993; and brother-in-laws, Foster Weaver and Larry Bittner.

He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Dorothy Welsh, Berwick; Sallie Luthi and husband Samuel Jr, Berwick; grandchildren, David Cleaver, Dawn Diefenderfer, Laura and Trey Luthi; great grandchildren, Haileigh Cleaver and Brianna Garrison; sisters, Jane Weaver, Orangeville; Karen Bittner, New Columbia; Jackie Klinger, Lime Ridge; brother, Raymond Messersmith and wife Linda, Orangeville; and many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends at a viewing this Friday, February 17, 2017 from 6 till 9 at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third Street, Nescopeck. Additional services will be announced at a later time.

The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Eagle Hose Company, 325 S. Mercer St, Berwick or Berwick Fire Police, 1437 Fairview Avenue, Berwick, PA 18603.
