Betty Jane Penles

Betty Jane Penles, 96, formerly of Rosewood Apartments, Berwick, passed away at St. Thomas Post-Acute Rehabilitation (Berwick Retirement Village) on Sunday, October 3, 2021.

Born July 17, 1925, in Koonsville, PA (rural Shickshinny), she was a daughter of the late Bruce Earl and Ruth (Kline) Kramer. She attended Berwick schools and resided in Berwick for most of her life. She was employed by the Berwick Weaving Mill in her early years. In 1987 she retired from the former Country Maid Sportswear. After her retirement, she was employed as a part-time clerk in the mailroom at Bloomsburg University and as an aide at the YMCA daycare center.

She was a former member of the YMCA Silver Sneakers program. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing word puzzles. She was raised in the protestant faith. She converted to Catholicism in 1947, and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Berwick.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, John J. Penles, as well as six brothers: William Kramer, Clinton “Pete” Kramer, Robert Kramer, Jack Kramer, Glenn Kramer, and Donald Kramer; and five sisters: Isabel Wagner, Lois Chapin, Lenna Cerullo, Beverly Levan, and Peggy (Gordon) Grozier.

Surviving are three daughters: Kathleen Penles, Harrisburg; LuAnn Foster and her husband, Norman Foster, Selinsgrove; and Mary Lee Berninger and her husband, Doug Berninger, Berwick; one granddaughter, Sarah Stabley and her husband, Jake Stabley, great-grandson, Kash Stabley, and great-granddaughter, Kendall Jane Stabley. She is also survived by various nieces and nephews. She was the last survivor of her immediate family.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 721 Monroe Street, Berwick, with the Rev. William T. Barbee, her pastor, officiating. Interment will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick.
