Olen Paul Hess, 92, of Mifflinville, went home to his Lord and Savior on Friday, October 29, 2021, at his home.
Born on March 18, 1929, he was the son of the late Charles and Bertha (Rudy) Hess. He graduated from Mifflin Township Senior High School in June 1947. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army from December 1950 to January 1953 where he served in the Korean war as a medic. After his return from the service, he completed barber school and was self employed for over 60 years as a barber. His business was attached to his home in Mifflinville. Olen was well known as the town barber and was dedicated to his customers until the age of 91 when he retired.
Olen was a loyal member of Mifflinville United Methodist Church where he served as the custodian and grounds keeper for many years. He also was a part of the easter egg committee.
On April 25, 1951, Olen married the love of his life, Evelyn Jean (Honse) Hess. Through their 66 years of marriage, they had three children, four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Evelyn preceded Olen in death in November 2017.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Charles Barry Hess and granddaughter, Gretchen Artley; a son-in-law, Frank Buffone, Jr.
Olen will be greatly missed by his loving daughters: Opal Buffone; Ann Lunger and husband Roger; daughter-in-law, Ann Hess. He leaves behind his beloved cat “Maisey”. He was dearly loved by his grandchildren: Bridget Yoder and husband Russ, Adam Hess and wife Amanda; Melissa Burt and husband Ryan; Amy Martin and husband Mickey. He adored his great grandchildren: Rebekah and Jon Troup, Russ, Jr. and Jocelyn Yoder, Abbey and Luke Burt, Mychaela and Arianna Neal, Christopher Hess, and Emily Martin.
Family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM, on Friday, November 5, 2021, at Mifflinville United Methodist Church, 4th and Market Streets, Mifflinville, followed by a memorial service with Rev. Dr. R. Kenneth Gunter officiating. A mask must be worn, and social distancing will be observed.
