William A. Meyers, 91, of Dorrance Township passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at home, with his daughters by his side.
Born in Hazleton on February 14, 1926, he was the only child of the late Lawrence H. and Phyllis (Angove) Meyers. He attended Hazleton Area High School, and enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 during WWII, where he served honorably for 2 years. After his discharge, he continued his education at Penn State University where he earned a BA in Wildlife Management, and MS in Forestry. He also performed Doctoral work at Cornell University. He was the Chief Forester for American Electrical Power Company, NY. In 1969, he returned to Lake Nuangola and earned his second BA and MS degrees in Elementary Education. He taught science and math for the Hazleton Area School District, until his retirement in 1996.
Bill attended St. Martin’s in the Field Church, Nuangola. He was a 70-year member of the Hazle Azalea Fellowship Lodge #327 Free and Accepted Masons, Hazleton. He was also a member of the Tri County Rod and Gun Club, the NRA, and the National Audubon Society. He was an outdoorsman, who loved hunting, fishing and gardening. He was also an avid reader and liked bird watching.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo (Griffith) Meyers in 2016; and grandson, Duane Eric Jenkins in 2007.
He will be missed by his daughters; Anne (Jeffrey) Thomas, Hobbie; Jill (Duane) Jenkins, Wapwallopen; Melissa (Richard) Gotthardt, Danielsville; grandchildren; William (Rebbecca) Thomas, Kristina (Michael) Nissel, Amanda (Paul) Fink and Zachary Gotthardt; and great-grandchildren, Allyssa, Jace, Colton and Noah.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Rifle Association.
