Norma J. Shortz

Norma J. Shortz, age 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at home.

Born in Hobbie on December 13, 1930, she was the daughter of the late F. Ray and Arlene J. (Hippensteel) Smith. She was a graduate of Nescopeck High School, class of 1948. She worked at Berwick Shirt Factory and later, at the Berwick Hotel. She retired from Berwick Industries.

Norma was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Nescopeck. She was a life member of the VFW Post 8227 and a member of the auxiliary. She was also a member of the Nescopeck Borough Firehall and Nescopeck Community Ambulance. She was a long-time member of the first Bowlerettes at Stenko’s. She liked to crochet and made blankets for all her family members. She liked working on crossword puzzles, playing cards, and watching old television shows like Mash, I Love Lucy, and the Andy Griffith’s Show. She followed Nascar and was an avid Jimmy Spencer fan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Leonard “Corky” Shortz on December 6, 2010; a son-in-law, Terry “Butch” Probst; sister, Inez Derr; and grandson, Brian Foust.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Kathy Probst, Nescopeck; Alan J. Shortz and wife Ivy, Franklinville, NY; Pamela Taylor and companion James D. Taylor, Nescopeck; grandchildren, Kimberly Foust, Terry L. Probst, Amber Rabiega, Amanda Van Pelt, Aaron J. Shortz, Kaitlin Garcia, Kristina Taylor, Cody Taylor, and AJ Shortz ;great grandchildren, Travis Foust, and Mason Van Pelt; great-great grandchildren, Landon and Aiden Foust; and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third Street, Nescopeck with Pastor Gloria Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Berwick. Family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM and Friday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
