Janet E. Eckert

Janet E. Eckert, age 85, of Berwick passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Born in Sugarloaf on June 16, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Harold W and Pearl A. (Welsh) Shaffer. She attended Berwick High School, class of 1956. Shortly thereafter, she was married and became a full-time mother, working hard to provide a loving home to her 5 children. In the mid 70’s, she worked for a short time at Wise Potato Chip Factory. She later became employed at Berwick Hospital and worked as a Home Health Nurse’s Aide until retiring in her early 60’s.

She was a member of the Bethany Church of Berwick.  

She enjoyed gardening, canning, freezing fruits and vegetables, and making strawberry jelly. She loved being a homemaker, baking, cooking, and feeding others. She made excellent pies for every occasion and could be heard humming any time she was in the kitchen.

In addition to her husband Jerry Eckart of 24 years, she will be greatly missed by her daughters: Darlene Stout; Diana Federici; Brenda Vajda; Beth Vogt and husband Michael; son, Ronald Samsel, Jr and wife Tammy, all from Berwick; stepchildren: Jerry Eckert, Jr and wife Lisa, Mountaintop; Corrinne Eckert, Dallas; Lynette Eckert, Hanover; Scott Eckert and wife Valerie, Drums; Steve Eckert, Allentown; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Robert Shaffer and wife Erma, Berwick; Wayne Shaffer and wife Christine, Berwick; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepson, Randy Eckert; and first husband, Ronald Samsel, Sr.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third St, Nescopeck with Pastor John Leek officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Berwick. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, April 15, 2024, and on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
