Robert Reid Chambers

Robert Reid Chambers, age 86, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at home, with his loving family by his side.

Born in Berwick on June 19, 1938, he was the son of the late Carl Reid and Florence Rebecca (Hess) Chambers. He was a graduate of Berwick Area Senior High School, class of 1956. Following graduation, Bob worked at Weis Markets for 8 years in Berwick and Bloomsburg.  In 1961 he enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and served over 6 years. In 1978 he went active duty and served honorably for 18 years as a recruiter in the Army National Guard assigned to the northeast area in PA.  After retiring from the Guard in 1996, Bob worked for the Berwick Area School District for almost 10 years in the Reassignment Room at the Berwick Middle School.

Bob was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Nescopeck. He was also a member of the Berwick Lions Club where he was instrumental in starting the Leo Club at Berwick Middle School. He was a life member of the former Defender Fire Co #3 and was one of the first members of, and a volunteer for the Berwick Area Ambulance Association.  He also served on the board of the Salvation Army. He enjoyed golfing, was an avid reader, and was a huge fan of Penn State and Bewick Bulldogs football teams.

When Bob met Carol in 1956, they knew they were met for each other. They celebrated 62 years of marriage on June 2, 2024. When Bob was in good health, he and Carol took 2 trips to Hawaii and enjoyed a trip to the Caribbean Islands.  They also had a favorite Bed and Breakfast in Hummelstown, PA. The Westwynd Farm where they enjoyed visiting his sister’s family and spending time with each other. Bob was a homebody and loved family gatherings and spending time with friends.

Bob loved his family and his country. He loved and was so proud of his daughter Kelly and her husband Rick.  When Maddie and Ben came into his life, he was the proudest of grandfathers and loved them beyond the moon and back.  He had a special relationship with his grand dog, Lily, who recognized his limitations and loved to visit with him.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Carol A. (Waltman) Chambers; daughter, Kelly Ann Miller and husband Richard; grandchildren, Madeline and Benjamin Miller; brothers-in-law, William Waltman and wife Aileen; Jerry Waltman and wife Bernadine; Marvin Brown and wife Joanne; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sally A. (Chambers) Bowen and her husband Steven, sister-in-law Beverly (Waltman) Brown, brother-in-law Harold J. Waltman and wife Barbara, sister- in-law Betty (Waltman) Laubach and husband Clarence, sister- in-law Dorothy (Waltman) Cooper and husband Herbert.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 401 Broad Street, Nescopeck, with Pastor Gloria Montgomery officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Berwick. Family will receive friends on Sunday Aug. 25, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Heller Funeral Home, LLC 633 E Third St, Nescopeck, and at the Church on Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
