Leona V. Stemrich, of Nescopeck Twp, formerly of Nuangola Station, Mountain Top, celebrates a life well lived as she peacefully passed away on August 27, 2024 at her home at the age of 94.
Born in Mountain Top on July 12, 1930, she was the last living of 10 children born to the late George and Anna E. (Eckrote) Rumpilla. She attended Fairview High School. In her younger years, she worked for Laddie’s Potato Chips.
At the age of 16, Leona met the love of her life, Theodore J. Stemrich. They started dating and in 1950, they were married. After starting a family, she dedicated her time to provide a loving home for her husband and children.
She enjoyed time with her family, cooking them her famous mac and cheese; sometimes too salty as she would say. She was a great baker, and everyone loved her pies! She loved playing Bingo, taking walks, watching The Lawrence Welk Show and dancing. She especially loved sitting in the sunroom window with her husband looking at their flowers & watching the birds on the feeder. Leona loved spending time with her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved traveling up and down the east coast with her husband, especially visiting Virginia Beach, camping in Florida, and Niagara Falls. She liked collecting shells on the beach with her sister-in-law, Dorothy.
In addition to her loving husband of 74 years, “Ted”; Nescopeck Twp; she is survived by daughters, Karen Hammond and husband Ed, Wisconsin; Donna Booth, Mountain Top; Gerri Herron and husband Tom, Nescopeck Twp; and son, Charles Stemrich and wife Patty, Nescopeck Twp; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, George Rumpilla, Donald Rumpilla, Arlene West, Virginia Duffy, Marion Dress, Betty Harter, Harry Rumpilla, Ruth Roushey, and Jean Hildebrand; sister’s-in-law; Dorothy Roberts, June McMullen, and brother-in-law Leonard Stemrich.
Leona’s life will be celebrated with love, honor, and fond memories at a later date. At Leona’s request, there will be no public services.
