Shirley Louise (Caley) Hess, 87, of Mountaintop passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Smith Health Care, Mountaintop.
Born in Newport Township on August 18, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Rachael (George) and George Caley, Sr. She graduated from Newport Township High School and worked at Scranton Apparel, Ronnie Dress, Shickshinny, and Leslie Fay, Glen Lyon.
Shirley was a current member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Mountaintop. She was a former active member of St Marks United Church of Christ, Pond Hill, where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, a Sunday School teacher and a board member. She was also an auxiliary member of the Pond Hill Fire and Ambulance. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing, and often gave her creations to family and friends as gifts. She liked working on word search puzzles. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, James J. Hess, Jr. and wife Helen of Pond Hill; daughter, Kathy Shannon and husband Dennis of Pond Hill; grandchildren, Scott Hess and fiancée Leslie, Amber Dietterick and husband Chad, and April Hess and fiancé Glynn, Edward Yustat and wife Brandi, Rachel Kostro and husband Ken; great-grandchildren, Leland Dietterick, Tru Dietterick, and Savanna Wildoner; sister-in-law, Marlene Karchner; brother-in-law, Milton Hess and wife Judy; and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Hess, Sr. on July 18, 1993; brother, George Caley, Jr.; and sister, Ethel Hess.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 8, 2016 at St Marks Church, 285 Pond Hill Mountain Road, Wapwallopen, with her pastor, Reverend Michele Kaufman officiating. Interment will follow in Pond Hill Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 10:00 until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 316 S.
