Jean M. Steward

Jean M. (Barnes) Steward, 91, of Berwick passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Geisinger Bloomsburg Health Care, where she was a patient for the past few months.

Born near Mt Carmel in Wilburton #2, on March 14, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Lewis G and Anna Stefanski Barnes. She attended the Swamp School in Catawissa. She worked at Columbia “The Big Silk Mill”, Bloomsburg and Bear Silk Mill, Berwick. In 1959, she started at Consolidated Cigar Factory, and worked there until it closed. Most recently she was employed at Wise Potato Chips and the Press Enterprise.

Jeannee was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Berwick, a life member of the Catawissa American Legion 541 Auxiliary, and a life member West Berwick Hose Co. #1 Ladies Auxiliary, where she was also a charter member. She was a Den mother for the Cub Scouts.

She enjoyed housekeeping and yard work. Jeannee liked keeping up on current events. She was a very giving and social person who took the time to talk to everyone of all ages. She was “a well-liked woman”.

Jeannee loved her family, and will be greatly missed by her sons, Curtis H. Steward, Jr and wife Joanne, Berwick; Jody Steward, Berwick; grandchildren, Destiny Steward and Derrick Steward; 1 great grandson, Colin; brothers, Ralph J. Barnes, Catawissa; Alvin Barnes and wife Patricia, Dover, DE; sisters, Nancy Long and husband Ronald, Catawissa; Mary K. Makowski and husband Walter, Elysburg; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Curtis H. Steward; brothers, Lewis, Thomas, Harry, Raymond and Charles Barnes; sisters, Alice and Rita Barnes, Margaret Girton; Louella Kessler; and granddaughter-in-law, Shelby Steward.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 13, 2017 in Calvery United Methodist Church, Berwick with her pastor, Reverend Laura King and niece, Reverend Lisa Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until the time of service.
