Shirley M. (Thomas) Stewart, age 93, of Slocum Township passed away on Monday, September 19, 2022, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born in Nuangola on September 15, 1929, she was one of 12 children born to the late Albert and Margaret (Sachs) Thomas. She attended school in Nuangola and worked at American Cigar in Mountaintop for several years. She was later employed as an aide at Davis Manor in Mountain Top, retiring in 2006 at the age of 77.
In her quiet time, Shirley enjoyed working on word search and crossword puzzles. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer J Stewart Sr in 1981; a son William Stewart; sisters, Rachel Keiner; Martha Dudzikowski; Betty Dudzikowski; Barbara Maslo; Rose Wagner; Agnes Ruckle; Margaret Myers; and brother, David “Dutch” Thomas.
She will be greatly missed by her daughters: Shirley “Mae” Ridall and husband Robert, Berwick; Carol Welch and husband Mark, Pond Hill; Mary Balliet, Pond Hill; son, Elmer J Stewart Jr and wife JoAnn, Nuangola; cherished grandchildren, William Stewart Jr; Mark and Brad Welch; Elmer Stewart III; Roger, Colton and Cameron Balliet; and 5 adored great grandchildren. She also leaves behind sisters: Myrtle Duffy and Marion Golla, Nuangola; Connie Hilderbrandt, Slocum; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 26, 2022, at Heller Funeral Home, LLC, 633 East Third St, Nescopeck, with Pastor Paul Brace officiating. Interment will follow in Albert Cemetery, Church Rd, Mountain Top. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 4:00-6:00 PM and Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
